Overview
PRTSCR – ISPFv2.2 Print Screen Utility
(current version 0.9.00 2024-10-11)
ISPF v2.2 (ISPF-like product from Wally Mclaughlin) does not include a print screen function (i.e. PRINT, PRINT-HI) as provided by the IBM ISPF product.
ISPF maintains several system Z-variables for developer use. Some Z-type variables for screen information include ZSCREENW (screen width, e.g. 80), ZSCREEND (screen depth, e.g. 24) and ZSCREENI (screen-image).
Under ISPF v2.2, ZSCREENI always includes the last screen (panel) received in a ISPF application dialog.
ISPF PRINT-like Command
CPRTSCR is an ISPF application providing a screen-image capture function (somewhat similar to ISPF PRINT) for use under ISPF v2.2 as a CLIST to print ZSCREENI content (via CP PRTSCRN) to a sequential file, ISPF LIST session via CLSTIT (part of CLGLST add-on) file or local printer via PRINTOFF.
CPRTSCR can be invoked from a dialog manager or ISPF command line.
As CPRTSCR is external to ISPF and dependent on application control from ISPF with associated Z-variables, the key to capture the correct screen-image content is when CPRTSCR is invoked!
When invoked from a dialog manager after the DISPLAY function, ZSCREENI will include the last image received from the dialog manager program.
When invoked from the command line, ZSCREENI will include the last image received prior to the command line submission. Therefore, if the desired screen-image to be printed is the one currently displayed, press ENTER twice to force ISPF to execute a screen receive process (hopefully resulting in a re-display of the current screen) followed by submission of “TSO CPRTSCR” from the ISPF command line.
The captured screen-image is raw text data (WYSIWYG) and does not include ISPF panel attributes!
CPRTSCR may not be able to capture a screen-image from applications using TPUT/TGET full-screen I/O (in other words, terminal I/O performed outside of ISPF DISPLAY service). However, some RFE or RPF screens may be captured provided ISPF panels are utilized.
Using PRTSCR
PRTSCR uses TSO/ISPF CLIST, CPRTSCR.
When capturing screen-image to a sequential file, assigned file attributes and dataset name are as follows:
RECFM : FBA LRECL : 133 (1 ANSI printer control, 132 printer data) BLKSZ : 1330 DSN : ZUSER.PRTSCR.date.time - or - ZUSER.ZPREFIX.PRTSCR.date.time (when zprefix and zuser are different) DISP : MOD
Command Syntax:
CPRTSCR DESTINATION MSGS FDSN(your.dsn) HEADINGS DESTINATION keywords: ISPF - capture screen to ISPF LIST file (default) FILE - capture screen to sequential file PRT - capture and print screen to local printer MSGS keyword: NOMSG - when specified, suppress confirmation message FDSN parameter: FSDN()Fully qualified DSN for FILE destination HEADINGS keyword: HEADINGS - when specified, generate heading and trailer lines for FILE or PRT destinations When using the FILE destination, the sequential file DSN assigned is as follows: DSN=zuser.prtscr.date.time or, when zprefix is different from zuser DSN=zuser.zprefix.prtscr.date.time The assigned DSN can be overridden by using the FDSN() parameter to specify a fully qualified DSN for FILE destination.
Examples
Example 1: Capture a screen-image to user sequential file from a dialog driver:
/* from CLIST */ . %CPRTSCR FILE FDSN(your.dataset.name) . . .
Example 2: Print screen-image to local printer (uses PRINTOFF)
/* from CLIST */ . %CPRTSCR PRT . . .
Example 3: Capture screen-image to ISPF LIST session dataset (requires CLGLST add-on):
/* from CLIST */ . %CPRTSCR . . .
Prerequisites
ISPF v2.2 (ISPF-like product from Wally Mclaughlin) is necessary to use this software.
Two user-mods, ZP60014 and ZP60038, are REQUIRED to process CLIST symbolic variables via the IKJCT441 API on MVS 3.8J before using the this software. More information on user-mods ZP60014 and ZP60038 can be obtained from the following website:
http://www.prycroft6.com.au/vs2mods/
Check your system to determine if one or both user-mods are required. ZP60038 requires ZP60014.
Several other components are pre-requisites. See README file for a complete list of required and/or optional software including download sites.

TLS : Version 1.2
Once connected, log on using any of the TK4- default user ids and passcodes.
After successful logon, select option I (I for ISPF) from the TSO Applications Menu. Note, option I is not listed on the menu – this is intentional.
From the ISPF PRIMARY OPTION MENU, type L in the command field (OPTION ==>) and press ENTER to display the ShareABitOfIT Software Demo Menu.
Press ENTER twice.
Enter TSO CPRTSCR to capture screen to ISPF LIST dataset.
Confirmation message should display on current screen.
Enter TSO CLST B to browse the ISPF LIST dataset.
Max to the bottom of the browse session.
The ShareABitOfIT Software Demo Menu should be present.
View results using scrolling commands (e.g. PF7/PF8).
Press PF3 to exit the browse session.
Use PF3 until returning to the TSO READY prompt.
Log off TSO.
Terminate 3270 session.
Installing Software
After downloading the ZIP file, the approach for this installation procedure is to transfer the distribution content (HET and/or XMI) from the your personal computing device to MVS with minimal JCL (less than 24 lines for easy copy-paste) and to continue the installation procedure using supplied JCL from the MVS CNTL data set under TSO.
- Click here to download zip file to your PC local drive.
The below README file includes a ZIP file content list, pre-installation requirements and installation steps.

ZSCREENI is a useful variable should raw screen content be a necessity.
It does not provide the exact functionality of current-day ISPF system, but incrementally improves the overall feature set of ISPF v2.2.
Again, the key is understanding the timing of when content of ZSCREENI is set.
I hope this post finds a place in your ISPF development tool kit and/or overall knowledge base!
Although a simple print-screen function can be performed from a terminal emulator, nostalgic needs warrants the need for a “good-old” PRINT-like function under ISPF 2.2!
